Hello,
We have been currently converting many of our campus users
from a dialin type access to our network to direct attached networked
PCs. In the process we have been trying to convert the method that
these users connect to remote services (like RLG, EPIC, MELVYL and others)
from modems and dedicated circuits to network connections via the internet.
To our surprise many services have started to allow access to them
via the internet (Dow Jones, RLG, Dialog, etc). But, we ran into OCLC who
is only providing FirstSearch and EPIC via the internet, but not PRISM and
ILL. Talking with the OCLC support people, they explained that they are
being restricted by the internet governing body from providing those
two services because they are revenue generating. This surprises us since
most of the services listed above are revenue generating.
Can someone explain what the reason for this restriction and better
yet, why these services are being treated as different entities than the
others. After that, can anyone point out directions to pursue that one
can take to try to get these restrictions lifted?
