POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:
HEAD, ACCESS SERVICES DEPARTMENT
Responsibilities: Under the general direction of the Assistant Dean for
Bibliographic and Access Services, the department head provides leadership and
management for services and staff of the Access Services Department. The
Head of Access Services supervises the coordinators of circulation services and
interlibrary loan services, and the supervisor of the Current Journals,
Microforms and Media Room. The department head develops services, training and
procedures in order to achieve the library's goals of maximum efficiency and
responsive public service. Must communicate and coordinate with information
services librarians, collection development librarians, technical services
staff, library systems staff, and library patrons.
Qualifications: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school
required. Minimum of 3 years of successful management experience in
circulation, interlibrary loan, or other library public services. Demonstrated
success in supervision, planning, and innovation. Strong commitment to services
for undergraduates, graduates, and faculty. Demonstrated excellent
communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to lead and excel
in a team environment as well as the ability to work well in one-on-one
situations. Understanding of the mission of a research university and of
the changing educational environment. Evidence of effective collaboration
with faculty and students. Demonstrated record of ongoing professional
development desirable. Experience using technology to meet the needs of
library users desirable.
Salary: $50,000 depending on qualifications. Comprehensive benefits
package; choice of retirement programs including TIAA-CREF; tax-deferred
annuity program available; released time to take a class up to 3
hours/week; no state or local income tax.
Library Information: The Access Services Department is responsible for the
direct public service functions that make library documents and materials
available to the public. There are three separate service units within the
department: 1) Circulation (including shelving, billing for lost or
non-returned materials, and reserve service for class materials requested by
professors), 2) Interlibrary Loan, and 3) Current Journals, Microforms and
Media Room--this area contains current journal issues and other types of media
(e.g., microforms, general purpose computers, and the library's collection of
audio and video recordings) that require staff assistance to use.
Department personnel are responsible for opening and closing the library.
Total department staff: 1 librarian, 16.5 FTE support staff, 36 FTE student
assistants.
The Libraries are a member of the Association of Research Libraries, hold
about two million volumes, with a current materials budget of $4.2 million.
