Electronic Services Librarian

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:  Provides leadership in defining, initiating, and
maintaining innovative, user-focused electronic services in support of
reference activities including areas such as distance education and electronic
reserves. Serves as managing editor of the librarys web site.  Provides general
and specialized reference services.  Participates in the library bibliographic
instruction program.  Fulfills collection development and library liaison
responsibilities in assigned subject areas.  Fulfills requirements of faculty
status in areas of contributions to librarianship, scholarly activities, and
service.

QUALIFICATIONS:  ALA accredited MLS.  Ability to interact effectively with all
levels of staff and faculty.  Ability to provide reference services in a wide
range of subject areas.  Broad understanding of both print and electronic
reference sources and the impact of technology on libraries.  Ability to set
and attain goals effectively.  Excellent organizational, planning,
interpersonal, oral and written skills.  Successful experience with web page
design and with web-based technologies such as HTML.

SALARY/BENEFITS:  Salary range is upper $30's to lower $40's for a 12 month
appointment, tenure track, TIAA/CREF, 24 days vacation, flexible benefits

Pay Range: $3509 - $5791 per month

The University Libraries seek qualified candidates for the position of
Systems Administrator to act as the primary technical resource for its
new Ex Libris ALEPH 500 Integrated Library System (ILS).  Position
responsibilities include ensuring overall database integrity and
successfully managing maintenance, project priorities, and development
of the system.  Working with the Systems Librarian and library staff,
identifies and implements enhancements to system and upgrades to
hardware and software in response to user needs.  Serves as technical
liaison for the Michiana Academic Library Consortium (MALC) Libraries
(University of Notre Dame, St. Mary's College, Bethel College, and Holy
Cross College).  Manages investigation, trouble-shooting and resolution
of hardware and software problems to ensure reliable system
availability.  Designs, implements, and manages authorization and access
control for the system and manages selection, acquisition, and
installation of new equipment for the ILS.  Serves as liaison to the
campus Office of Information Technology for all system hardware and
software problems.  Supervises library systems staff positions.  Designs
needed custom reports and program enhancements to extend system
functionality.  Serves as a key member of various library teams involved
in ALEPH development and customization.

The preferred candidate will possess a bachelors's degree in a
technology related field with significant demonstrated
management/development experience with various operating systems (e.g.
NT, UNIX) and internet protocols (e.g. TCP/IP, Z39.50).  Must possess a
solid working knowledge of HTML and of library standards (e.g. USMARC,
NISO).  Programming experience with SQL preferred.  Must possess strong
analytic, reasoning, and problem resolution skills and provide evidence
of success in planning, innovation, project management and application
of technology to meet user needs.  Requires ability to communicate
effectively with colleagues, vendors, and patrons in a variety of
settings.  Continued professional growth required.

ENVIRONMENT:
Our institutions (University of Notre Dame, St. Mary's College, Bethel
College, Holy Cross College) comprise the Michiana Academic Library
Consortium (MALC) in northern Indiana. These institutions recently
migrated their online systems from NOTIS to Ex Libris ALEPH 500. The
University of Notre Dame, which is the largest of the MALC institutions
with approximately 75% of the total campus populations, is a national
Catholic teaching and research university enriched with a diversified
faculty.  Serving 8,000 undergraduates, 2,000 graduate students and over
800 faculty, the University Libraries is located in the Theodore M.
Hesburgh Library, which houses the majority of the 2.3 million volumes,
and seven branch libraries.
