I am aware of several libraries that use a special piece of telecom
equipment called a line manager. This modem-sized box has the capability
to detect the type of call coming in on the phone line to which it is
attached, and route the call to the appropriate device among all the
devices attached to the manager. Simple line managers automatically
route to a fax machine or a modem. Others can alternatively route to
voice mail or an answering machine as well. There was a review of many
line managers in PC Magazine about 2 years ago.
I am very curious to hear from any libraries that are using line managers.
What do you use it for, is it reliable, what model/cost? etc? Is this a
mature technology that could be widely recommended to libraries? Thanks.
