Larry Greenwood and Karen Schneider are discussing coffee shops
in libraries and other "unusual outsourcing": Larry said he is
considering a "BarnesandNobleish" sort of thing --
There is a pretty nice coffee shop in the new San Francisco Public
Library main branch -- outside the security gates, away from the
books & terminals, but still inside the building.
I would be interested myself in hearing of any other libraries
which offer this: more than just "coffee - in - the - lobby" but
a real "coffee shop", and particularly if it is outsourced. I
remember some examples from the distant past, but most of those
foundered eventually on coffee stains, crumbs, and bureaucracy.
Very interested to learn whether things are loosening up again.
Museums do it.

Jack,
I should have mentioned that if the coffee shop concept should be
implemented here at Minot State, I have insisted on a carpet/furniture
replacement fund--using proceeds from the coffee sales--be put inplace so
that stained carpeting can be replaced as needed.
