I've just subscribed to this listserv, so I hope that the following
inquiry is within the realm of issues dealt with on this list.

We are interested in hearing how other libraries are handling the issue
of providing word processing capabilities at public computing stations
in the library. Our library is a small academic library at a two-year
institution. Computer labs are available on campus for students to use
for word processing, spreadsheets, etc.; however, these labs are used
for instruction as well, which prevents students from using them during
scheduled classes. We have recently set up one dedicated computing
station for word processing only, which so far, has worked out fine;
however, I'm sure word will spread soon regarding its availability. The
other ten public stations in the library are currently set up only for
access to online web-based resources, the local online catalog, and
email. We are exploring the possibility of expanding word processing
capability at public computing stations in the library, but we are
interested in hearing from other libraries first. Any input or feedback
regarding the following questions and/or any other information or
insight surrounding this issue would be most appreciated.

1. If your library provides word processing capability on public
computing stations, is the software on computers dedicated for word
processing only, or is it on computers that offer other applications and
online resources as well?

2. Is there a policy regarding priority usage (e.g. research vs. word
processing)?

2. Is there a signup sheet to reserve time slots for word processing?

3. Is there a time limit imposed for using a computer for word
processing purposes?

4. Is there a limit to the amount of paper used for printing word
processing documents? and/or is there a fee assessed for paper usage?

Thanks!
