For Immediate Release. . . . .
Lacey, Washington. WLN announced today that it will offer two new
products through the World Wide Web named WebLN and WebLN PAC.
WebLN, a Web interface to the WLN database, will provide access to
WLN's 11 million MARC record database. WebLN PAC will provide
customized Web PACs for individual library and library consortia
bibliographic databases. Additional information is available at:
http://www.webln.com
WebLN offers full-featured access to the WLN database, well known for
its standard of quality. WebLN searching is designed for the novice
and sophisticated user at the same time. From occasional library user
to veteran library staff, searching with WebLN is more successful and
productive. Library patrons will have effortless access to the
bibliographic richness of the WLN database known for its accuracy,
quality and many library holdings. Library staff can download MARC
records for use in their own catalogs aided by advanced searching
techniques including sophisticated Boolean searching. MARC records
from WLN's bibliographic database, the only MARC record database under
continuous authority control, can make local library cataloging more
efficient and effective.
With WebLN PAC, WLN will provide local library catalogs and library
consortia union catalogs. Each can be designed and customized for the
local application. Names, graphics, displays, help screens, searches
and indexes are all customizable. WLN's capable staff will maintain
and operate the WebLN PAC for the library or consortia thereby
reducing capital outlay, library staff time and operating costs.
Mounting a library catalog on the Web can be affordable with WLN's
offering of this product. The library or consortia only need to
provide Web browser software and Internet access.
Pricing will be simple and easy to understand. For WebLN,
subscriptions to simultaneous logons will be the primary component.
The price of each simultaneous logon goes down as more are added.
Searching is unlimited. Up to 25 downloads are included with each
simultaneous logon each month. WebLN can cost less than many MARC
record CD-ROM products. For WebLN PAC, in addition to simultaneous
logons and unlimited searching, the size of the database (number of
bibliographic records) will be an additional cost element.
Paul McCarthy, President and CEO of WLN, said of these new products,
"This is yet another step for WLN in implementing new products and
services that meet the needs of libraries. We are delighted to be able
to provide WLN's sophisticated bibliographic system through the World
Wide Web. Libraries are major contributors to fulfilling the
information needs of people through the World Wide Web. We at WLN are
thrilled to be able to contribute to the satisfaction of this need.
This is yet another step forward for us and libraries."
WebLN will be available at WLN's booth, #954, during ALA's 1998
Midwinter Meeting in New Orleans, from Saturday, January 10 through
Monday, January 12. Come take a look.
