Season's Greetings to all list members,
=20
PULSE - the Finnish PUblic Libraries FrontpagE is a single point of
contact to distributed library resources in Finland and around the world. =
=20
http://www.lib.hel.fi/syke/english
In 1997, new resources and services have been developed and added to
PULSE. These have been described and can be accessed also in English.=20
BULLETIN BOARD
http://www.lib.hel.fi/syke/bulletin/
The new, improved bulletin board pages inform libraries nationally of
library events, further education and training in the field, news and job
vacancies. It also provides an easy-to-use, up-to-date and free-of-charge
communication and information channel for the library community in
Finland. In addition, a market place for 'For Sale' and 'Wanted' ads and a
gossip column are available for all users. Articles can also be submitted
for publication on the notice board.=20
Each library can apply for a joint password for all staff by sending in
the information via the www form. If your library or institution wants to
inform Finnish libraries of events concerning the Finnish library
community, you can also apply for a password.=20
All messages sent in by libraries will be automatically stored on the
notice board. A closing date for each message should be specified, so that
outdated messages can be deleted. This will also be done automatically.
Libraries can themselves submit the information to the appropriate
category by using their password. The information can be browsed according
to subject and date.=20
LINK LIBRARY
http://www.lib.hel.fi/syke/english/projects/linklibrary.htm=20
The main aim of the PULSE Link Library is to provide improved Internet
resource retrieval. The Link Library provides an efficient tool for
reference work and a user interface for information retrieval on the
Internet for the library community in Finland. A professionally produced
directory will also benefit library patrons and Internet users.=20
The production of the directory will be distributed and made as easy as
possible. Librarians can send in bibliographic and descriptive data, via a
www form, by using a password. As the resources will be encountered in
every day reference work, the directory will eventually facilitate
everyday information retrieval on the Internet.=20
The contribution of libraries is central in building the directory as
librarians will search, select, evaluate and produce the material. Other
producers of networked resources can also send in their suggestions for
inclusion in the database.=20
All material included in the database will be classified and indexed.
Thus, the material in the Link Library will be carefully selected,
cataloged and systematically organised.
You're all welcome to have a look and tell us what you think!
