Faculty Positions
The Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University
of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, seeks full-time faculty in each of the
following areas: (1) organization of information, cataloging and
classification and (2) information in organizations, information resources
management and management of information systems. The school will
consider applicants with specialties in library and information science or
related disciplines.
Our faculty is engaged in a wide variety of research projects including
the national NSF/ARPA/NASA Digital Library Initiative and a study of the
use and impact of information technology in low-income neighborhoods.
Faculty and students are involved in a variety of other interdisciplinary
initiatives
on campus.
The School offers master's, certificate of advanced study, and doctoral
programs. An undergraduate minor in information studies is under campus
review. The School's unique distance education enrollment option for the
Master's degree uses a variety of technologies and focuses on ways to
involve students in remote locations in all aspects of professional
education.
The School hosts several other units that support teaching, research and
service. The Library Research Center supports faculty research and
fosters a strong working relationship with the professional communities.
The Center for Children's Books is developing new programs for teachers
and librarians. Information Researchers cooperates with the Institute
for Competitive Manufacturing
in the College of Engineering. Prairienet, a community computing
network, originated in the School. Faculty and students have strong
cooperative arrangements with the University Library.
The appointment will be effective August 21, 1998. To ensure full

is open, but at least one appointment will be made at the junior level.
Salary is commensurate with experience. Ph.D. degree or equivalent is
required. We will consider candidates close to completion of the

POSITION: Collection Management Coordinator SEARCH EXTENDED
APPOINTMENT RANK: Assistant or Associate Professor
SALARY: Minimum $33,000 for Assistant Professor
Minimum $40,000 for Associate Professor
AVAILABLE: April 1, 1998
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leads in the design, implementation, analysis and evaluation of collection
management projects, such as weeding, serials review, storage. The
Collection Management Coordinator is the primary implementor of CDM
day-to-day activities. As project manager, leads projects from inception
to completion; as an advocate for the Libraries' physical collections,
shares in-depth knowledge about the collections and collection management
practices. Establishes, in consultation with appropriate colleagues,
collection development guidelines for use in decision-making by CDM office
staff and other library teams. Designs and coordinates orientation for
new subject librarians and faculty departmental representatives. Plans
cooperative collection management projects and assigns staff resources.
May assume responsibility for subject liaison with an academic department.
Coordinates activities of the Collection Development & Management office
in a collaborative organizational environment. Works closely with subject
and electronic services coordinators, CDM librarians, and serves on the
CDM Planning Group to ensure that the Libraries offer an optimal mix of
information resources with available funding. Plans, supervises, and
evaluates the work of four FTE staff who provide bibliographic, technical
and clerical support for CDM activities. Reports to the Team Leader for
CDM.
COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT & MANAGEMENT (CDM) ORGANIZATION:
UTK collection development and management activities are performed by 30
subject librarians across the organization. The CDM Team, responsible for
a $4+ million information resources budget, consists of a Team Leader;
Coordinators for Humanities, Sciences, Social Sciences, Electronic
Services, and Collection Management; 2.5 fte CDM librarians, and 4 staff.
The Team Leader, who reports to the Dean of Libraries, provides leadership
for all collection-related activities, including allocations for
information resources. Coordinators for the Humanities, Sciences, Social
Sciences, and Electronic Services have dual reporting relationships to CDM
and Reference. One CDM librarian monitors, analyzes, and reports
collection management data; another leads the preservation program.
QUALIFICATIONS:
ALA-accredited MLS degree. Several years' post-MLS library experience in
an academic or research library. Demonstrated organizational skills,
creativity and flexibility, ability to make decisions, excellent
interpersonal and communications skills, ability to deal with changing
priorities based on client and library needs; commitment to fostering a
collaborative work environment. Knowledge of trends in publishing and
higher education. Broad knowledge of academic/research library collection
development and management issues. Working knowledge of major
bibliographic tools. Preferred: Supervisory experience. Experience with
collection development/management. Experience with faculty liaison and
selection of library materials. Familiarity with library preservation
issues. Knowledge of distributed computing, networking, and electronic
information access methods.
BENEFITS: Librarians at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville have
faculty rank and status and are appointed for twelve months. This is a
tenure track appointment. Library faculty must meet University
requirements for promotion and tenure. Annual leave is accrued at the
rate of two days per month and sick leave at the rate of one day per
month. Faculty have their choice of a state retirement plan or TIAA/CREF.
Non-refundable contributions to either retirement plan are paid for the
employee by the University. Group health and life insurance plans are
available. Tuition remission is available for all university employees;
partial undergraduate tuition remission is available to dependent children
and spouses of UT employees.

ENVIRONMENT: The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, a Carnegie Research
Level One institution, enrolls approximately 26,000 students from every
state in the United States and approximately 100 other countries. As
Tennessee's comprehensive campus, UTK offers more doctoral programs than
any other institution in the state, and its faculty attract nearly $80

The UTK Libraries, with an annual budget of almost $10 million, holds 2
million volumes and receives approximately 14,000 current serials. The
Libraries system includes the John C. Hodges Library and four branches on
the Knoxville campus: Agriculture-Veterinary Medicine, Archives and
Special Collections, Cartographic Information Center, and Music. A fifth
branch, the Social Work Library, is located in Nashville. Over three
hundred persons are employed, including 50 librarians, 7 exempt, 129
non-exempt, and 160 students. UTK Libraries is a member of SOLINET, the
Association of Research Libraries, the Center for Research Libraries, and
the Research Libraries Group. The UTK Libraries is installing a
client-server integrated system in 1997. The Libraries also offers a
Web-based information system and access to a variety of electronic
information sources.

POSITION: Computer Systems Administrator [two positions available]
RESPONSIBILITIES: Provides computer system administration and networking
support for servers, public workstations, and faculty and staff desktop
computing in the University Libraries.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree required; a degree in computer
science, information systems, or related field and/or advanced degree
preferred. With bachelor's degree, minimum two years experience as a
system administrator supporting UNIX or Microsoft NT in a networked
environment; or one year experience with master's degree. One year
experience in hardware and operating system diagnostics and maintenance
for DOS and Windows computers.
COMPENSATION: Salary range $33,132-$44,175; TIAA/CREF and other
retirement options; 24 days vacation per year; generous sick leave. No
