                  TECHNICAL SERVICES LIBRARIAN

The Coastal Plain Regional Library is accepting applications for the
position of Technical Services Librarian.  The successful applicant
will administer a three-person technical services department and the
Geac ADVANCE automated system which is networked to six public
libraries and ten school libraries.  Other responsibilities will
include database management, original cataloging, retrospective
conversion, coordination of microcomputer applications and Internet
access, computer training, and consulting with one affiliated county
library.  Applicants must be highly motivated, energetic and have
their own transportation (mileage will be reimbursed), and should
desire to live in a rural area.  The ability to communicate clear
instructions orally and in writing is essential.  The position
requires an ALA-accredited MLS and Georgia Librarian Certification.
A minimum of two years' experience is preferred, but recent library
school graduates with strong technology backgrounds will be
considered.  Experience with Geac ADVANCE, UNIX, DOS, Windows,
spreadsheet and word processing applications is desired.  The salary
begins at $2,798.70 per month for two years' experience; benefits
include teachers retirement, health insurance, and a comprehensive

Position: Affiliate Assistant Librarian, Special Collections Department.

Environment: The University of Delaware's attractive main campus is located in
a suburban community of 30,000 and is within easy reach of the cultural
resources of Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore and Washington.   The
University of Delaware Library comprises the Morris Library and four branch
libraries.  The collections include over 2.2 million volumes, and a strong
collection of electronic resources networked to the University. The University
of Delaware Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the

Job Description:  This position is a two-year, non-continuing temporary
appointment.  Reporting to the Coordinator of the Manuscripts Unit in the
Special Collections Department, the Affiliate Assistant Librarian will
process, arrange, and preserve historical and political papers, including the
congressional papers of Thomas Carper, Delaware's member-at-large in the U.S.
House of Representatives, 1981-1993; use archival descriptive standards to
produce collection finding aids in paper as well as digital format for access
via the Internet; supervise project student assistants; provide reference
assistance for collection throughout project; possibly conduct oral history
interviews supporting the Carper collection; plan publicity and promote
research value of the collection.  The Special Collections Department has
strong manuscript and archival holdings in Delaware history and politics, with
several 20th century congressional collections.

Qualifications: Required: ALA accredited MLS degree; knowledge of and/or
experience in archival processing, description, and preservation; strong
organizational skills and ability to work independently; excellent
interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written; experience with
online catalogs and microcomputers, including database applications and SGML
or HTML; ability to perform physical activities associated with archival
environments.  Preferred: Graduate coursework in archives, degree in history
or political science, subject familiarity with American politics and
government or 20th century history, experience with oral histories,
supervisory experience.

Salary: Affiliate Assistant Librarian: Minimum $27,211.

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

The School of Law Library at Southern Illinois University is accepting
applications for an Assistant Technical Services/Systems Librarian as an
Assistant Professor in a tenure track position. The library staff includes
seven professional librarians and twelve FTE civil service support staff.
The Law Library serves a law school faculty of about 30, a law student body
of 350, the university community, as well as the legal community and general
public. The library holds over 330,000 volumes and volume-equivalents, uses
OCLC and INNOPAC automated systems, and actively incorporates growing
electronic information into existing library resources.

POSITION:       Assistant Technical Services/Systems Librarian

REQUIREMENTS:

                M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited institution is required.
Significant
experience with an automated cataloging system such as OCLC and an
integrated library system, such as INNOPAC, preferably in law library
environment. Knowledge of technical services operations, AACR2, LC subject
headings and classification, USMARC formats, and authority control.
Experience with Internet and Web publishing is desirable.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

                JOB DESCRIPTION

ASSISTANT TECHNICAL SERVICES / SYSTEMS LIBRARIAN

POSITION SUMMARY:

        The Assistant Technical Services/Systems Librarian coordinates
activities
in adapting technical services functions to an electronic environment,
performs day-to-day technical services and systems-related activities, and
participates in the management of Technical Services Department.  Primary
responsibilities include cataloging, integration of electronic documents and
databases to the library online catalog, database maintenance and quality
control, electronic distribution of library resources,  and assistance in
supervising routine technical services activities. Appointment is expected
to be at the Assistant Professor level in a tenure-track line.

RELATIONSHIPS:

The Assistant Technical Services/Systems Librarian reports to Head of
Technical Services.

The Assistant Technical Services/Systems Librarian supervises civil
service support staff positions in the Technical Services Department.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.  Cataloging:

- serves as a resource person for cataloging monographs, serials,
audio/video materials, microforms, and electronic resources using OCLC and
OCLC CatME.
- performs original cataloging, classification, series and subject
analysis of all formats of materials.
- maintains authority and quality control for the online catalog
database.

2.  Systems:

- organizes and provides  access points to electronic information
resources through the online catalog.
- prepares technical services resource materials, and converts
them into HTML format.
- distributes materials received in electronic format to the law
school community.
- monitors functionality and new developments on technical
services
automated systems, and assesses need for hardware and software upgrades.
- oversees the database maintenance and quality control of the
integrated library system.
- assists in implementation of upgrades to OCLC, and the
integrated library system.
- participates in training of library staff in use of automated
systems and the Internet resources.
- assists in maintaining current documentation on the use of the
library's automated systems.

3.  Acquisitions, Serials and Documents:

Assists in supervising staff responsible for;
- ordering, receiving, and payment for all library materials using
the integrated library system.
- checking-in, claiming, and routing of serials using the
integrated library system.
- OCLC Union Listing.
- processing federal and Illinois government documents received
from the depository programs.

4.  Administrative and Other Responsibilities:

- assists in hiring and supervising Technical Services staf members.     f
- assists in revising policies and procedures, preparing management
reports, and responding to surveys, questionnaires, etc.
- engages in original research and publishing in accordance with
the Law Library Promotion and Tenure Guidelines.
- prepares exhibits and displays illustrating topics related to
the Law Library, the School of Law, and law and lawyers.
- depending on experience and needs,  participates in the
development of CD-ROM and local area networks,
and the law school, library and department Intranet.
- serves the School of Law by participating in activities or on
committees as requested by the Dean or his designate.
- serves the law library profession by actively participating in
local, regional, and national professional associations.
- performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.  Education
An M.L.S. degree or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution.

2.  Experience/Knowledge:
Significant experiences with an automated cataloging system such as OCLC,
and an integrated library system such as INNOPAC, preferably in law
library environment.

Knowledge of technical services operations, AACR2, Library of
Congress classification and subject headings, and MARC formats.

Experience with Internet searching and Web publishing is desirable.

3.  Other:

Strong service orientation and organizational skills are
necessary. The
ability to work and maintain good working relationship with law faculty,
students and staff, and excellent oral and written communication skills are
also essential.

Responsibilities: Provides leadership for serials services and
participates in initiatives to attain cohesive collections and
services; provides effective access to, acquisition of, and delivery
of serials in all formats, and oversees a serials service desk; may
engage in state-wide initiatives for acquiring electronic resources
through the Virtual Library of Virginia project (VIVA); maintains /
analyzes data on serial collections, prices, and use; develops plans,
priorities, and workflows; establishes documentation, procedures, and
systems specifications; ensures effective use of systems technology;
monitors vendor performance; and oversees staff training and
development. Supervises 4.5 FTE. Includes collection development
assignment and may include night and weekend hours.  Reports to the
Head, Bibliographic Services.

Qualifications: MLS from an ALA accredited program; minimum 1 year
professional experience in a library or the serials industry;
experience with serials; proven supervisory, analytical,
communications, planning, and project management skills; effective
participation in team-based work; ability to manage and exercise
leadership in a changing environment; knowledge of library
acquisitions practices; experience with library systems and personal
computer applications; and commitment to professional development.
DESIRED: Experience in public services or cataloging; knowledge of a
European language; and background in collection development.

LIBRARY: Serials is a part of the Bibliographic Services Department,
in which the unit heads of acquisi-tions, serials and cataloging
collaborate with the Department Head in the management of the records
of the library database, and the processing and preservation of
library materials.  The Serials Services Libarian also participates in
collection development and public services programs.  Overall library
staff of 22 librarians and 43 support staff serve campus community and
significant off-campus programs with collections of  700,000 volumes
and 6,500 current subscriptions.  Innovative Interfaces system was
recently installed.  A building expansion of 76,000 sf. is in
progress.

LOCATION: Old Dominion University, a publicly-supported urban,
research university with an enrol--lment of 17,400 student and 600
faculty members, is located in Norfolk, the center of Tide-water
Virginia.  The area offers lively cultural life, nearby seashore or
mountain recreational activities, and a moderate climate.  Norfolk
also offers close proximity to an international airport.
