Colleagues,
Thanks to all for the interesting discussion and the advice
send to me privately. I have not yet decided what I am
going to do about the camera, I expect I will begin by
addressing a complaint to the Director of the Library when
he returns from vacation.
To answer the questions asked by several folks:
The camera is on all the time, and people can be clearly
identified in the foreground. There is no audio feed.
The Director, who is a librarian, gave permission for the
camera, as he does for everything requested by any body outside
the library as far as I can tell. We are to lose on half of a
floor of the library, which houses our bound periodicals, to
another department this summer.
The camera is about the size of a sandwich, is not noticable,
there is no sign. Obviously once the pictures are linked to our
web page, the students who use Netscape will discover its existence.
The reason for the camera, given to me by the computer
person who installed it, was to show the campus as a friendly,
live actions place, where things are happening. This is meant as
a marketing device.
The screens of the computer workstations are not visible, but
people are clearly identifiable at the stations nearest the camera.
It is fairly difficult to identify people at the Reference Desk,
but librarians rarely sit there, we rove the area.
