CONTINUING EDUCATION SEMINARS (still open)
The University of Texas at Austin, Graduate School of Library and
Information Science is hosting two seminars on cataloging with the new
DDC21--one in Austin, and one in Houston.
The speaker for both seminars is Dr. Joanna Fountain (joanna@tenet.edu),
lecturer in "Organization of Materials" at the University of Texas at
Austin, GSLIS. She is the cataloger for Austin ISD, and occasionally
works independently as a cataloging contractor and consultant, using a
variety of classification schemes in the professional cataloging services
she provides to libraries. This past summer, she attended the "Dewey 21
Workshop for Library Educators" in Dublin, Ohio, sponsored by OCLC/Forest
Press, publisher of the DDC products.
CATALOGING WITH DDC21: DEWEY FOR THE 21st CENTURY
Austin, Texas, November 23, 1996
Cost: $60.00
CATALOGING WITH DDC21: DEWEY FOR THE 21st CENTURY
Houston, Texas, January 25, 1997
Cost: $80.00
Purpose/Program:
The 1996 publication of the _Dewey Decimal Classification, Edition 21_
brings major changes to the classification of library materials in three
areas: Public Administration (351-354), Education (370), and Life
Sciences (560-590). Participants will examine these, as well as
significant changes in Religion (296-297) and Insurance (368), and new
features of the 4-volume set. The session will also include a
discussion of implementation procedures for users of earlier editions,
and a brief demonstration of the Dewey for Windows CD-ROM.
Things to bring:
This workshop will benefit attendees most if they are able to take the
DDC21 books to the session. Also, if possible, registrants are asked to
take 10 or more MARC record printouts (or shelflist cards) in one or
more of the three major revision areas from a Dewey catalog for the
hands-on practice session. Registrants may submit questions to be
answered at the workshop to the GSLIS with their registration forms, or
via e-mail to Dr. Fountain (address above).
