This announcement is being cross-posted to several lists; please
excuse any duplications.
The Music OCLC Users Group (MOUG) will hold its annual meeting in New
Orleans at the Hotel Inter-Continental, January 28 and 29, 1997. The
program will include a separate continuing education workshop,
co-sponsored by the Music Library Association's Education Committee,
on how to create series authority records for scores and sound
recordings locally to national standards. The workshop will be
taught by Phillip De Sellem of the Library of Congress and Alice
LaSota of the University of Maryland.
Two plenary sessions will frame this year's meeting. The first will
be a talk on the OCLC/LC Uniform Title Correction Project,
whimsically entitled "Authority Control in Sonata Form," and presented
by Rebecca Dean and Susan K. Westberg of OCLC, and Deta S. Davis of
the Library of Congress. We are also especially pleased to
announce that Rick Noble, OCLC's Vice President for Marketing and
Reference Services will be the speaker at our closing plenary
session. Mr. Noble will speak on "OCLC and Reference Services: Past,
Present, and Future." This marks MOUG's first plenary session focused
primarily on reference services, and as Mr. Noble will be including a
capsule history of OCLC from its modest beginnings to modern-day
multinational, it should be of interest to all meeting participants.
Featured program sessions this year are two concurrent "Ask MOUG"
sessions, one each for cataloging/technical services and
reference/public services. These will be open forums facilitated by
music librarians who are recognized experts in each area of library
service--in this case, Richard Jones (University of Notre Dame) and
Ruthann McTyre (Baylor University) respectively. Come and bring your
questions, such as: How are others providing for FirstSearch,
especially in light of costs? Is anyone editing and exporting
records from the Harvard database, for retro-con or other purposes?
Is there life after cataloging?
While MOUG is oriented toward people who use OCLC products and
services for cataloging music or for finding information about music
materials for their patrons, we are not exclusively oriented to music
specialists, and we encourage participation by all interested
parties, including those for whom handling music is only a part of
their jobs. We extend a special, warm welcome to those of you who
don't think of yourselves as music librarians but who would like to
learn more about these sometimes-awkward library materials. Indeed,
one of the primary distinctions between MOUG and the Music Library
Association (MLA), is our emphasis on training.
Registration for the meeting will be $40 for MOUG members, $50 for
non-members and late registrants (postmarked after January 6, 1997),
and $20 for students--all payable in US funds, please. A separate
registration fee of $40 ($50 for non-MLA or MOUG members) is
required for the series authority workshop. For further details and
registration materials, please contact:

A copy of the preliminary program and the registration form for the
annual meeting (including hotel registration information) may be

We encourage early registration this year, as the meeting is
sandwiched between the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras at the height of
New Orleans' tourist season. I hope to see many new faces and old
friends in New Orleans.
