Gerry McKiernan's observations about the potential decrease in power of
links and increasing significance of electronic agents mining data are
right on, except that I think it has already happened. I keep a modest
site (few glitzy graphics though it is in HTML and not plain text, 4 hrs
per week to maintain and add) for Montana State University news at:

I am not the main "Web Master" for the campus and have not sought access
to automated reports of hits, etc. However, because it is not a big
site, I've been able to keep track of hits in several ways: By topic
area (agriculture, business, home/health, etc.), by specific story, and
by response to an email tag in which readers give me more details about
themselves. Once every three months I've taken the time to record the
number of hits on each of the 300 or so features.
The numbers tell me this: Any feature that has been posted more
than three months is being accessed directly, not through the menus. So,
if content is king, I'd better go back and do some more news and feature
stories.

By the way, I "lurk" on this list because of the excellent summaries
in Current Cites and some of the discussions of copyright, right of
access to information, etc.
