THIS MESSAGE IS BEING SENT TO SEVERAL LISTSERVS.  PLEASE
EXCUSE THE DUPLICATION.

    The entry deadline (DECEMBER 15,1996)  for the GALE RESEARCH
AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN REFERENCE AND ADULT SERVICES  is
quickly approaching.  Nominations are now being accepted.

    The award is given annually to a library or library system for
developing an imaginative and unique library resource to meet patron's
reference, reader's advisory or adult services needs.  The resource can
be a bibliography, a guide to the literature of a specific subject, a
directory, a database or any other project that has helped the library
meet any of those needs.

    The Gale Award for Excellence in Reference and Adult Services
consists of a cash gift of $1,000 and a citation that will be presented at
the RASD Award ceremony in San Francisco, June 1997.  Nominations
are to be in writing, stating in detail how the resource has contributed.
The following information should be included:

--Description of the resource
--Format of the resource; eg. database, card file, etc.
--Target audience
--Sources used to compile the resource
--Criteria used in selecting the material for inclusion
--Breadth of coverage (time and subject)
--Characteristics that make the resource unique and imaginative


A sample of the resource (pages, printout, disc,etc) must accompany the
nomination.

Nominations are to be sent to the Committee Chair by December 15, 1996.
