I posted a question a few weeks ago about possible CD-ROM programs to
use as a backup to our main catalog during downtime. Someone asked me
to summarize the answers I received, so here goes. Many thanks to all
the people who responded!
Five companies were suggested, and I got information from all of
them. First-year costs for a CD-ROM backup program ranged from over
$13,000 to about $2,500 for a collection of roughly 78,000 titles.
All of the search software seems to be DOS-based (not Windows). The
last time we had microfiche produced as a catalog backup, it cost us
less than $1,100. After looking at the various programs and the costs
involved, we have decided that the increased cost for backup search
software simply is not worth it to us. We will run a local report of
our whole catalog at regular intervals and use some simple text search
software and/or print it out to keep at the Reference Desk. We'll try
the local solution for a year and re-evaluate.
We must have some kind of backup for system downtimes -- if we were a
straight academic library we might get away without one, but being the
medical library we do come under the emergency patient care heading.
I know better than to believe any vendor's claim of 100% uptime.
We've already had downtime related to weather (love them hurricanes),
network packet problems, and system backups and upgrades.
