Reference/Electronic Services Librarian
The University of South Alabama seeks an individual to provide leadership
in the utilization of electronic resources for the University Library's
Reference Department. The person in this position reports to the Head of
Reference Services and participates in all phases of reference activities:
general reference services (including evening and weekend rotation),
library instruction in both traditional and electronic environments,
collection development and electronic search services. Specific
responsibilities include the development, implementation, evaluation and
promotion of electronic reference services and the continuing design and
development of the University Library Homepage.
Required qualifications are an ALA-accredited MLS and technical experience
with electronic reference services including: basic knowledge of UNIX
commands, HTML coding, CD- ROMS, microcomputer hardware, a variety of
library applications, peripherals and Internet resources and tools. The
person in this position should have a strong public service orientation,
excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, the
ability to work independently and in a team, well developed planning and
organizational skills and have a commitment to the library profession.
Preferred qualifications include experience in academic reference, OCLC
and NOTIS.
This is an academic, tenure-track, 12-month appointment at the Assistant
Librarian rank or higher. Salary is negotiable, based on experience and

Systems Librarian
SMU Libraries
Southern Methodist University
Southern Methodist University Libraries invites applications for the
position of Systems Librarian. Reporting to the Central University
Librarian, the Systems Librarian also responds to the needs of the
independent Law and Theology Libraries and the Business Information
Center, all of which are united by a shared automated library system.
The Systems Librarian will work closely with the staff of the
university's Computing Center and with work groups from the Libraries
to support and develop SMU's automated library and information systems.
We are looking for someone with strengths in strategic planning,
coordination, communication, and leadership to assist the university as
it explores new technologies for information systems and electronic
resources. The Libraries currently use NOTIS; a move to a client-server
based system, however, is foreseen in the near future, and this
position would play a key role in the decision process.
A successful candidate will be able to provide leadership in a team
environment, supporting, planning, developing, and implementing all
aspects of library automation. The Systems Librarian must establish and
maintain communication channels between Library personnel and the
campus Computing Center; between the Libraries and vendors of library
systems and hardware and software sources; and between SMU and regional
consortia. Must be able to join on-going automation projects, including
a new integrated library system and campus interfaces. The Systems
Librarian has a role in writing grant proposals for information
technology projects.
Specific responsibilities include: facilitating implementation and
administration of the Libraries' automated systems; participating in
the campus-wide Library task forces; coordinating with the campus
computing center; contributing to strategic planning, program
development, and overall operational management.
Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited program or its equivalent
library systems experience. Demonstrated knowledge of integrated
library systems and experience in implementing one or more in an
academic environment; substantive experience working in Libraries in a
systems-related capacity. Effective communication skills. Demonstrated
expertise in teaching staff and users computer and information
technology skills. Knowledge of DOS/Windows, Mac, and UNIX operating
systems. Required basic systems experience and knowledge in MARC and
national bibliographic utilities; and knowledge of networking systems.
Evidence of continued intellectual and professional growth is required.
Salary range: $36,000-$40,000
