Subject: First Search Login-- Clarification about security
After a couple of private messages to me I think I need to clarify the
"security" issue in the HTML coding I wrote. The login and passwords
are
NOT secure from the user that can display or view the source of the
page.
My intent was to provide autoamted access to FirstSearch, not to hide
the login and passwords. The only alternative I had was to list them on
our FirstSearch page as I did for the page for a FirstSearch telnet
session.
Now why did I do it this way?
First, OCLC's scripts will not work on our server.
Second, I can write HTML and even some primitive JavaScripts but do not
have the time to learn perl or cgi for our server.
Third, no one at our computer center has the time either.
What OCLC should have done is to allow access by domain name. That is
how Britannica Online and many other vendors do it.

We have settled on a vendor for our card swipe readers and have just
received a test system. I highly recommend Scan Technology. Below is

Stev Flowers spent 45 minutes talking me through the installation and
minimal programming the units. We are using VT 420 terminals with the
card swipe readers and keyboard wedges connecting into the key board
port. The smart CCD barcode readers from WelchAllyn are then daisy
chained with the wedge. IT WORKED THE FIRST TIME WE TRIED IT!!!!!!!
Here is the actual equipment from Scan Technology:
Model 2000/12 magenetic stripe card reader wedge.(intended originally
for IBM compatible PCs).
Model 1028 Keyboard Interface Controller Wedge for Interface to DEC VT
400 terminal.
Power Supply; Part Number: 099-0005-002 7.5VDC; 677mA
1028 to DEC Keyboard Interface Cable; Part Number: 020-0164-005 Rev. G1
Bar Code Wand (pen) with Clip -- for programming wedges.
Black Adapter Cable to connect Model 2000 to Model 1028 Scanner Input
Port A.
Adapter cable to connect Model 2000 to Model 1028 Reader Input Port B
Plus apporpriate manuals.
For scanning barcodes we are uisng a Welc Allyn ScanTeam 3000-03 CCD
Decoder. It works great along side of the equipment from Scan
Technology.
