Threats to Public Access in the Digital Age
Many members of the library community are concerned about current trends toward
the commercialization of our information resources. We are beginning to hear
claims that library "competition" will reduce commercial revenues for
information products. So we have to ask ourselves: will digital and networked
information systems expand public access to information, or will they be used to
restrict access to those who can afford to pay? And is the National Information
Infrastructure program of the Clinton administration really "library friendly?"
