I am new to this list and not certain if this is the appropriate forum
for my question. Apologies, if it's not.
We have 12 publically-accessible pc's that are not networked. Access to
all programs is password protected. Currently, we require a user to
sign-in at the information desk, and then the person working at the desk
walks over to the computer to enter the password. We do this
for the following reasons:
1) To ensure that all users are authorized (the computer center
is only open to people with a badge from our institution)
2) To gather usage statistics (of computers, not of specific
programs)
3) To prevent users from doing the many harmful things to
the system that a user can do (access to the DOS prompt
and Program Manager is blocked except to the administrator)
4) To ensure that diskettes being used are virus-checked.
We would like to find an alternative to having to invidually log people
in because of the time that is now taking (our computers are spread out
around the room, and demand has been on the increase).
How are other organizations handling:
1) Monitoring who gains access
2) Keeping statistics
3) Making sure that diskettes are virus checked
4) Allowing access only to "public" (i.e., non system-op)
programs
I'm especially interested in hearing from other non-networked organizations.
