I don't know about Yahoo, but Lycos does sell the advertising
"banner" on their keywords, according to Rick Green of that
organization speaking at the LITA Internet Resources Group
session at ALA. That is, Lycos does not sell the result, only the
advertising space related to the keyword (not that advertisers
haven't asked them for the result, too!). If advertisers don't
buy a specific keyword, they get their banner displayed for
random keywords. Which leads to an interesting double-bind;
"random" means sex-related, and believe it or not, advertisers do
not want this association, Rick sez, so to pacify them Lycos will
retire its sex-related keywords from the the random pool. "Lycos
does not sell sex".
