1996 ALA/LITA International Relations Committee Annual Program
Name: The Development of Library Technologies in Asia
Date: Saturday, July 6, 1996
Time: 2-4 p.m.
Place: New York Hilton, Room 524
Asia has the fastest growing economies in the last 10 years, how is the
development in library technologies? Is English the official language on
Internet in Asia? Are there any Internet connections in Asian libraries?
Are there any computers in their libraries? Is there a public library in
Tibet? If you are interested in the above questions, please come to the
program and learn more about the development of library technologies in
Asia from our three speakers.
Wilfred Fong, 95/96 president of the Chinese American Librarians
Association, and the Assistant Dean of the library school at the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, taught library technology class in Hong
Kong in 1996 as a visiting professor. Professor Fong will give a overview
of library technology development in China and Hong Kong.
T.C. Li, Former Dean of Graduate School of Library and Information Science
at Rosary College (an ALA credit library school near Chicago), and
previous Director of the National Library in Taiwan, has given lectures
both in China and in Taiwan several times in the last few years. Dr. Li is
the advisor of "Asian Librarianship Series", and he will discuss the
development of library technology in Taiwan and Thailand.
Cate Hutton, previous ALA library fellow to China, was helping to build
the first public library in Tibet. She will share with us her own
experience as an American librarian working in Tibet.
