Hello folks -
As we start to discuss what it will take to make third party software
applications available for Linux, the point has been made that testing and
support of these products will be a large undertaking. As a matter of fact,
because the Linux environment is not one that is under our central control,
there is no guarantee that a product that works under version X of Linux,
installed by student A, will also work under version Y, installed by student
B. IS just does not have the resources to do this testing and support.
For this reason, we would like to propose the following partnership with SIPB:
1. We will provide and install Linux versions of products as they become
available (assuming that it is not an inordinate cost to our budget). We
would like to do this in conjunction with phasing in of a stable AFS for
Linux.
2. SIPB will take responsibility for testing and "vetting" each product,
with the deliverable being a statement of compatilibity (or differences)
between the Linux version and standard Athena versions, as well as points to
watch out for, evaluation of the product's stability, and what version(s) of
Linux are needed in order for the product to run reliably. This information
will be provided to IS and also publicized to the Linux community at MIT.
3. IS (mainly Consulting, Training and Pubs, and the faculty liaisons) will
be responsible for supporting only those aspects of the Linux products that
are identical with standard Athena versions. SIPB will support
Linux-dependent aspects of those products.
I'm sending this note to the three of you because you have either expressed
interest in this topic or because of positive interactions that I have had
with you in the past (or both). Please forward it to other SIPB members as
approriate.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Naomi Schmidt
