Well, Mark is in charge of "release engineering", so he should have
the definitive answers, but I'll take a shot at it.
Do you have in mind building a canonical SIPB/Linux source tree apart from
the I/S Athena source tree?
Yes, Mark is attempting to organize our sources.
Or putting at least some of the Linux porting
changes into the I/S Athena tree, and maybe having symlinks into it?
In my experience, getting I/S Athena to apply a patch to their sources
is like pulling teeth, except that pulling teeth is possible. I'd
assume that none of our work will be reflected in the Athena source tree.
Or maintaining a canonical binary tree (which I guess would be nearly
equivalent to a /srvd) and each person working on it keeps his own
source for the things he is working on?
Binary tree? We have a directory (/usr/athena/bin) on the machine
we're working on (keesh) that we put binaries in. When we begin
distribution, we may or may not have a srvtab, but it won't be
necessary in either case.
Do you have in mind something of your own akin to an SLS distribution
that people will use to get their machines up? Or do they start
with SLS and then get some overlays from SIPB?
They start with SLS. We will create an SLS series to be installed
once the machine is already up and running Linux. The distribution
will have all the packages you'd expect (kerberos.tgz, mail.tgz,
zephyr.tgz, discuss.tgz, tex.tgz, moira.tgz, olh.tgz, olc.tgz, etc).
Some machine-independant very huge directories may be distributed as
symlinks into afsland (/usr/athena/lib/tex/fonts comes to mind), or
maybe not.
Other questions of this genre?
Beats me. We'll jump off that bridge when we come to it.
