May I ask how this is going to be organized?

Do you have in mind building a canonical SIPB/Linux source tree apart from
the I/S Athena source tree? Or putting at least some of the Linux porting
changes into the I/S Athena tree, and maybe having symlinks into it?
Or maintaining a canonical binary tree (which I guess would be nearly
equivalent to a /srvd) and each person working on it keeps his own
source for the things he is working on? Do you have in mind something
of your own akin to an SLS distribution that people will use to get their
machines up? Or do they start with SLS and then get some overlays from
SIPB? Other questions of this genre?
