i was helping this guy yesterday. there were a number of other problems
with the machine corroborating the idea that the kludgey script was
unable to finish for some reason. i've asked him to run the key parts
of it again in the hope that he can tell me some useful error messages
this time.
no matter how the kludgey script munged /etc/athena/version, it probably
wouldn't have gotten a chance to do so in this case, because something
probably interrupted it. sorry i didn't notice that while i was helping
the guy.
