I too have seen PRECISELY the error message about not being able to get
the slot.

My NFS server is a RH5 system. The hard-wired connection works just
fine. But transferring large numbers of large files over wireless
connection (through an AirPort in bridge mode) hangs up with the error
message about not being able to get the slot.

My work around is to reboot the CLIENT. But really, it's just not
possible for me to get reliable NFS operation on large numbers of big
files via the AirPort. The client NFS chokes and dies.
