Yes, as I recall, this error message is encountered when trying to read a
RPM-2.5.x-created package with older versions of RPM. (I don't know exactly
which versions are involved.)
The fix is to be sure you're using a recent version of RPM, such as 2.5.1.
I'd suggest, for example:
ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/redhat-4.2/updates/i386/rpm-2.5.1-0.i386.rpm
I'll leave it to the people familiar with redhat-athena to dovetail this new
revision into their install procedure. :-)
