I think what I'm most objecting to are:
- Requiring AFS in order to install things. For one,
can home users using ISP's other than tether even
legally use AFS? And I'm not convinced that running
AFS and installing things using it over a 14.4 modem
is reasonable.
- Having to have infrastructure installed on the
machine (the SPM system) in order to install bits of
Linux-Athena seems like a problem. Personally, I'd almost
like tarball packages rather than RPM's (although RPM's
are probably easier to manage and better for most users).
There are quite a users, I'm sure, who want zephyr and
kerberos, but don't want any other bits of Athena
infecting their machines.
- Things are easy enough to install as they are.
The easier they get to install in the general
case, the harder they are to deal with when you
have a tough case that isn't dealt with by the general
casse. Microsoft Windows95 does a great job
of dealing with the general case, but have you
ever tried to get it to deal in the cases where
the general dcase fails? There should still be a
not-too-hard way of doing things by hand.
