Problems with Linux-Athena on kernel 2.0.12, my login.

Hello!

I've been having a rather annoying problem with my Linux-Athena installation.
I installed Slackware 3.1.0 last weekend and added the Athena customizations
as described in the Inessential Linux-Athena document of May 1996.

For most users, the system works fine from the xlogin: it attaches their
home directory, tells them how many messages they have, etc. For me, however,
it only occasionally works. Other times, once I punch in my password it just
returns to the xlogin screen. If I choose to "Ignore my customizations" when that
is occurring it gripes it can't find my home directory. Amazingly, however, I
can cd to /mit/dheimbur and it's there.

I ran the "set" command to see how the environment variables were set up. The field
USER didn't have my username (dheimbur), instead it had a chunk of the mailing
lists I'm subscribed to. For example, right now it says USER is "20:debate:24278".
Other times the USER field is much longer.

Intriguingly enough, if I shift-alt-f1 and bring up a TTY login, everything works
fine and I can check my mail.

Incidentally, even when I can login correctly in X I do get the message:
"from: can't find post office server.
from: trying unix mail drop."

If I get new mail I don't get the normal zephyr, instead I get:
zmailnotify: no POP server listed in Hesiod for 20:debate:24278

I tried reinstalling Slackware 3.1 from scratch but the same problem occurred again.
I would use the Linux-Athena redhat distribution, but there are some features
of the 2.0 kernel series that I like a lot. Plus, I've been through the kernel 2.0
upgrade once last summer and desire not to do it again.

Anyway, is this an Athena problem with my account? Is it something to do with
the fact that my account has been around for a year as a special account? Or is
it a configuration problem in one of my dotfiles or the system dotfiles.

Any ideas you could give for this strange behavior would be greatly appreciated.
If you need additional information, please let me know.

Thanks,

Doug H :)
