My two cents:

Ssooner or later, we need to give up support for 1.2 and a.out
executables. Given that 2.0 has been out for a while now, and the 2.1
development cycle will be starting in a week or two, it seems to be a
good time to start phasing out support for 1.2/a.out executables.

The only question then is how gentle do we want to be about the
phaseout. I will make the observation that it's probably easier for us
to development a way for 1.2 systems to get the right ELF shared lib's
so that they can use the linux_i386 executabls, than it will be for us
to support two sets of binaries for ELF and A.OUT.

The final consideration is that these days, there are so many security
holes in old Slackware systems (which is most of the 1.2 systems out
there), that we might just want to strongly recommend everyone upgrade
anyway.
