Well, I just finished the RedHat-Athena installation stuff. I'm happy
with it, at least for alpha software. I still want people to bang on
the installation and on an installed system. I've installed
limekiller with RedHat-Athena 3.0.3; please play with it and let me
know if you notice any major packages missing.
To install RedHat-Athena 3.0.3 on your system, you need to make three
floppy disks and obtain a little information. To make the disks:
attach linux
cd /mit/linux/redhat/redhat-3.0.3/i386/images
If you are on a Linux box, you can run:
./mkfloppies.pl
If you are not on a Linux box, you need to choose the appropriate boot
disk from 1213/*.img, then run these commands to make the three
floppies:
dd if=1213/bootXXXX.img of=<floppy> bs=32k
dd if=ramdisk1.img of=<floppy> bs=32k
dd if=ramdisk2.img of=<floppy> bs=32k
Next, go to your (soon to be) linux box, boot with the boot disk,
insert ramdisk1, then insert ramdisk2. When the installation starts,
be sure to choose a TEXT install.. Install from NFS.
You will need to know:
Your hostname (and domain)
Your IP Address
The X Server Chipset Requirement
What kind of Mouse you have and where it is located
Your modem port, if you have a modem
Follow the instructions.
Be sure to choose the athena client configuration. You shouldn't have
to change the sets or packages that are installed. You should verify
the defaults when they are presented to you, to make sure they are
correct (for example, verify your network, netmask, broadcast, and
gateway information).
Also, when asked if you want to install lilo, say "YES".
The installation should take about 30-45 minutes on MITnet, longer if
you are are on a slower link. You need about 200MB of free disk (plus
swap).
Please try this installation procedure. I'd like to work the bugs out
by next week. Also, please play with limekiller, to make sure that
things are working properly.. I was able to log in as myself without
problems (other than personal stuff).
If you have any problems with this, send mail to me and linux-dev.
We're working on better documentation, which will hopefully be
available next week.
Enjoy!
