i dont see any problem at all with fake meats, except that they
generally taste terrible, and when they do taste like meat, i dont want
them. i completely agree with ed regarding convenience at bbqs, for
weaning (although if they taste bad, they could discourage people from
going veggie) and regarding *form* - for awhile when i first turned
veggie i craved tacos, chicken pot pie, and peking ravioli. then i
found veggie ravioli, vegetarian pot pie, and tacos with soy nuggets
instead of beef - and they were great! it was the form and general
taste (e.g., the bread part of the peking ravs and soy sauce is the good
part, not the pork, at least IMO) i was missing, not the meat.
like ed said, Americans are used to having meat main dishes. we dont
really know how to cook good veggie meals. ethnic restaurants (chinese,
italian, indian, middle eastern etc) tend to be so great for vegetarians
because there are lots of dishes without meat, because they do not need
meat "substitutes" - they *make* main courses that are vegetarian.
while i tend to avoid fake meats (as of a few years ago, everything i
tried (mom insisted on buying them) were terrible) there are a few i
would suggest. morningstar patties are really good, esp for BBQ etc. i
brought them camping when everyone else was having hamburgers, and the
hardcore carnivores who tried them *really* liked them.
also, buddha's delight restaurant makes tasty and believable fake meats
(IMO anyway - i was especially impressed with the consistency/texture;
dad said they tasted/looked real, mom said they didnt but were still good)
are they still in business in chinatown? the same people run shangchai
delight in coolidge corner.
you can get veggie ravs at chef chows in harvard, also at pupu hot pot
(i prefer the former's). i have an *awesome* and easy recipe for veggie
pot pie that i will post if people want to try it. actually it was a
chicken recipe that i altered.
actually i will post in now b/c i will be out of town til july so wont
read responses. it will be the next message.
