9.4.5 update weirdness on cj.mit.edu

Two problems updating cj.mit.edu (a new dell optiplex GX280 just
installed with 9.3.18 and updated to 9.4.5)
- After I logged out after the update, the usb keyboard (there's no ps2
port on this machine) couldn't type into the text console correctly, it
just generated junk. X wouldn't restart either.
- After rebooting with the power button, the machine came up in 800x600
because the xorg.conf had no higher resolution modes defined (the
machine was correctly in 1280x1024 before the update). Modifying the
file by hand worked fine.
