I've just had a quick look at the program responsible for doing this
under GNOME (magicdev), and it looks fairly easy to integrate.  So,
probably not, at least in the longer term.

I also remember the discussion, but not where it happened.  At the time,
I believe we were looking at system daemons along the lines of Solaris's
vold, and concluded that they weren't suited to our needs; we were
ignorant of magicdev.
