For the record, the install.log Alex sent me contains no obvious error
messages, but ends with:
+ athena-mdoc ########################################### [ 98%]
+ glibc-devel ########################################### [ 99%]
+ athena-m4 ###########################################
suggesting that something hangs or gets cut off just before package
deletions happen. I'll need some more information. Your version file
ends with:

Were any of those update attempts manual? The machine has been rebooted
since 12:44pm today; was it visibly in the middle of an update when this
happened?
Also, something to try: nuke the last line of /etc/athena/version and
try updating. I'm guessing it will hang at the same place where the
update.log cuts off; tell me if it behaves any differently. If it hangs
there, suspend the update process and kill -9 the rpmupdate process;
then try running an innocent rpm command like "rpm -q kernel". My guess
is that it will hang; let me know what happens.
