Yep, removing the stale dir clears it up; should something be doing that
automatically, or do the recent patches make it unnecessary?  It had:

athena% ls -l /tmp/.esd
total 0
srwxrwxrwx    1 651      mit             0 Apr 30 09:35 socket

(which was actually when it was in limbo between bleeding 8.4
and 9.0)
