Hi. We will be kicking off the Athena 9.0 alpha release for IRIX
within a few hours. I'll be using this mailing list to keep alpha
testers apprised of events (beta and early testers will get mail
individually like they did in previous years).

We're going into alpha a couple of weeks late, and with some known
bugs in the GNOME stuff (gnome-terminal doesn't work very well, so
you'll probably want to fire up an xterm to work in; and xalf is
broken, which affects launching programs from the panel and starting
capplets in control-center). On IRIX, we're not doing anything which
ought to damage your machine or seriously disrupt your work, although
the standard alpha lack of guarantees applies in those areas.

Until the release goes early, you won't update to it automatically,
even if your machine is set AUTOUPDATE=true. To update to 9.0
manually, do a console login as root and run:

	detach -a
	attach dev-sgisys-90
	update_ws

The update should only take a minute or two, after which you should
reboot.

The system packs version will stay at 9.0.0 until the beta release, so
your machine will not track changes automatically (I think you can run
just "track" to update the local files from the system packs). I will
be sending mail to this list when there are important changes to
locally installed files which will need to be updated by hand.

As always, send bug reports to testers.
