The alpha release will start for Linux within a few hours. (There is
only one alpha Linux machine at the moment, frank-n-furter... but
perhaps we can switch some bleeding machines over.)
NOTE: You must update to 8.4.24 before you can update to 9.0; trying
to update directly to 9.0 will fail gracefully. And you must reboot
or "rpm --rebuilddb" between the two updates; trying to do the two
updates in close succession will probably fail rather ungracefully.
With those caveats kept in mind, the update is simple; do a console
login as root and run "update_ws 9.0".
It is a known problem that the update to 9.0 does not appear to
terminate after the "Ending update..." message. Just ^C it.
Obviously, this could turn out to be a big issue for automatic
updates, and I will be looking into it.
Another known problem is that xinetd takes a while to start up. And,
as with the IRIX alpha release, xalf is broken, so a lot of things
won't launch properly from the GNOME panel.
Bug reports to testers.
