What were you trying to do?
Log in on a bleeding-edge machine.

What's wrong:
My xload showed the load average hovering around 2.
        Examination with 'ps -el' revealed:

F S UID PID PPID C PRI NI ADDR SZ WCHAN TTY TIME CMD
000 R 4945 4359 24703 0 78 0 - 2013 - ? 00:00:00 panel
000 R 3115 4360 30622 0 78 0 - 2013 - ? 00:00:00 panel

Poking around with 'ps -ef' failed to reveal those processes.
        Looking again with 'ps -el':

000 R 4945 13342 24703 0 78 0 - 2013 - ? 00:00:00 panel
000 R 3115 13343 30622 0 78 0 - 2013 - ? 00:00:00 panel

        And again:

000 R 4945 13699 24703 0 76 0 - 147376328 - ? 00:00:00 panel
000 R 3115 13700 30622 0 77 0 - 2024 - ? 00:00:00 panel

The parent processes are constant. Looking at those with 'ps
        -ef':

jmorzins 24702 1 0 Apr10 ? 00:00:00 [xsession]
jmorzins 24703 24702 0 Apr10 ? 00:15:05 panel-wrapper
lnemzer 30620 1 0 Apr11 ? 00:00:00 tcsh -f /usr/athena/lib/init/xse
lnemzer 30622 30620 0 Apr11 ? 00:03:32 panel-wrapper
lnemzer 30626 1 0 Apr11 ? 00:00:00 esd -terminate -nobeeps -as 2 -s

It looks like panel-wrapper is continuously attempting to
respawn panel processes. These are failing to start (possibly
because of display issues). Incidentally, it looks like
there's a leftover esd process as well which should get
        cleaned up.

What should have happened:
There shouldn't be any processes left running by a user on a
        workstation after they log out.
