Which leads me to wonder why it was running the patch installation
code at all. [ -s "$PATCHES" ] should have come up false. I'm
guessing we aren't cleaning up PATCHES in finish-update or wherever
we're supposed to.
I submitted a patch to fix the problems with yes-file and the package
install root.
