I have found that forcing the PROM environment variable _R5000_CVT_WAR
to 0 makes the problem go away, apparently by disabling the workaround
for the rev 1.0 processor flaw.  Since this would presumably leave us
susceptible to the flaw, this is not a good long-term solution.  It
does tend to confirm the suspicion that it is a bug in IRIX; I have
opened a support case with SGI.
