Further investigation seems to point to a problem introduced by IRIX 6.5.7.
I updated the machine manually, and it had the same problem. I then tried
running AFS 3.4, and again had the same problem. The problem does not
occur when I boot the 6.5.3 diskless root.
I will pursue this further with SGI.
