So, opus is now experiencing a different, but related problem: a user
(ocschwar) entered his username and password into the xlogin on opus,
the screen blanked, and nothing happened for about 40 minutes. The
log messages from nanny are:

Jul 6 17:26:05 6B:opus nanny[705]: request: TTY=N_QUERY
Jul 6 17:26:05 6B:opus nanny[705]: reply: TTY=/dev/ttyq0
Jul 6 18:22:30 6B:opus nanny[705]: request: NANNY_PID=N_QUERY
Jul 6 18:22:30 6B:opus nanny[705]: reply: NANNY_PID=705
Jul 6 18:22:32 6B:opus nanny[705]: request: USER=ocschwar ...
Jul 6 18:22:32 6B:opus nanny[705]: reply: USER=OK ...

In a functional login, the above would have been followed by something
like (borrowed from [3690]):

Jun 28 15:43:32 6B:opus nanny[705]: request: LOGGED_IN=TRUE ...
Jun 28 15:43:32 6B:opus nanny[705]: reply: LOGGED_IN=logged in ...

The implication is that elmer never ran, or, alternatively, that elmer
crashed (what would axdm do in this case?). There is certainly no
elmer process running now. There are two axdm processes running
(which I guess is normal, since one is the child of the other):

 b0 S root 717 1 0 60 20 * 823:34 883a6304 Jun 29 ? 0:01 /etc/athena/axdm
 b0 S root 8421 717 0 60 20 * 825:107 8a59ea3c 17:25:59 ? 0:00 /etc/athena/axdm

Neither appears to be making any system calls according to trace.
nanny isn't either.
