FWIW, exposure was in the same state yesterday morning. I could ssh
in to the machine; killing something (possibly the update script) got
X to start, but the load average hovered around 4 until I rebooted the
machine (remotely). After removing any mention of an upgrade since
8.2.4 from /etc/athena/version, I ran the upgrade script manually
without incident.
