With the name of the offending file name (/var/sysgen/boot/gr2.a) in
hand, and my trusty Irix 5.3 for R5000, I was able to boot up, remove
the file (choosing install software, and going right to a shell inside
the installer does the right thing, and leaves our root filesystem
mounted conveniently on /root). Everything succeeded nicely thereafter.
My SGI is back online.
