As far as I can tell, the first problem has been fixed. The second one
is actually the result of a more general change, namely that <BACKSPACE>
sends a C-h rather than delete-previous-character. This problem is
under investigation, but the outcome may very well be a change in the
behavior of emacs. It was a local hack that made the backspace function
as a delete key in the first place.
