By our measurments (made on a slow machine and an account with the
standard dotfiles) the current login takes about 4.5 minutes, and
selecting quick login with the new system takes 1.5 minutes. I admit
that this is still painfully slow, although the time is much better on
faster machines. In time, more of these faster machines will probably
be appearing in the public clusters. Also, there are a few more
things we are doing to speed it up some more for the release this
winter.
Note that "Quick Login" gives you a reduced session without starting
all of the parts of the window system you may be used to. If it was
just faster without any other changes, we would make it the default
session.
If it really wasn't any faster for you this way, I would like to
investigate that further. Perhaps you have made major changes to your
dotfiles?
I'm also surprised that you couldn't logout. Typing "logout" in the
xterm that you get should immediately logout. I have just verified
that this works here.
