Re: FileMaker 5.5 Release Effort Underway
-----------------------------------------

Last Spring, Filemaker Inc. released version 5.5 of its flagship
product, FileMaker Pro. FileMaker Pro 5.5 runs on Macintosh and
Windows and includes a variety of new features, notably options for
record-level security and enhanced SQL querying.

Last Fall, FileMaker Inc. released version 5.5 of the other members
of the FileMaker product line, notably FileMaker Server (offering
high-volume data sharing to FileMaker clients via TCP/IP) and
FileMaker Unlimited (offering options for sharing data via the web).

Now that the complete 5.5 product line is available, the MIT/IS
FileMaker Release Team has begun meeting to determine how this new
product line should be made available to the MIT community under the
terms of our volume license with FileMaker Inc. We are looking at:

- compatability of the new software with previous versions
- compatability of the new software with the MIT computing environment
- new features
- documentation, training, and Help Desk support issues
- when/whether users should upgrade
- recommendations for assuring security given the limitations of the software.

We will send updates throughout the process. For more information on
FileMaker 5.5 and our release effort, see
http://web.mit.edu/swrt/filemaker/. If you have questions,
suggestions, or would like to participate in the release of
FileMaker, please contact the team via email at
filemaker-release@mit.edu.
