---------

Good afternoon,

Microsoft released the retail version of Windows XP today. MIT does not
recommend upgrading to Windows XP or purchasing equipment with Windows XP
at this time. As with any major operating system releases, some
applications or their installers will not work as expected and bugs in the
operating system will be found and need to be patched.

One major incompatibility that has been detected during preliminary testing
is that Kerberos for Windows 2.1 (KfW) does not work with Windows XP, and
consequently Kerberos dependent applications such as Eudora will not
work. We have identified the problem and are testing a new version of KfW
which does work with Windows XP.

At this time we have finished a preliminary minimal test of the IS
supported applications on a clean installation of Windows XP. These tests
were very basic to ensure that the software would install and perform basic
operations as expected. I am happy to say, with the exception of Kerberos,
all of the applications performed their basic tasks. More in depth testing
will be needed before MIT will support the use of Windows XP on campus. We
also need to expand the tests to include additional MIT critical
application that are supported by other MIT departments. For a complete
list of the results, see http://web.mit.edu/swrt/winxp/matrix.html.

We are gearing up a release effort to coordinate the testing and to
determine when MIT is ready to support Windows XP. We will be working with
the business process owners, PRCs and key stakeholders to provide
coordinated MIT support for Windows XP when the time is right. In the
meantime, we advise against using Windows XP for production machines. For
updates on the release effort see the release notebook at
http://web.mit.edu/swrt/winxp/. We will send an update on the effort in
early December.

If you have questions regarding the release effort or wish to provide
feedback regarding Windows XP, send email to winxp-release@mit.edu.

At this time, support is not available for Windows XP.

Jonathan
